Digital Solution for Skin Cancer Diagnosis

How 7N led the development and roll-out of a national healthcare efficiency initiative.

CHALLENGE

Digital diagnosis

The healthcare system in Denmark faced long wait times and inefficiencies in diagnosing and treating suspected skin cancer cases.

Each year, approximately 400,000 consultations involve skin cancer concerns — yet only 17,000 were malignant. There was a clear need to:

  • Speed up diagnosis

  • Improve coordination across sectors

  • Avoid unnecessary biopsies

A solution was necessary to support new clinical workflows through a shared digital platform, supporting workflows across general practitioners, dermatologists, and hospitals.

SOLUTION

A solution rooted in clinical practice

7N provided a cross-functional team to lead the development and rollout of a digital diagnostic solution for skin cancer. The team delivered:

Agile program leadership
Structured the approach for quick start-up and gradual rollout, focusing on key challenges

Workflow transformation
Modeled cross-sector workflows to ensure the solution was rooted in actual clinical practice

Procurement and compliance
Led efficient procurement processes, dermato-logy capacity planning, and IT quality assurance

Integrated solution architecture
Mapped national infrastructure, defined a target architecture, and designed system integrations

Solution roll-out
Modeled cross-sectional processes and business cases to support widespread adoption

IMPACT

Nation-wide impact

The solution enables GPs to take high-resolution images of skin lesions using a DermKit (iPhone + dermatoscope) and send them for rapid assessment by a teledermatologist.

The project won multiple awards and resulted in measurable improvements in diagnosis delivery and outcomes:

Dermatologist response times dropped from 10 weeks to 1 day

~50% of patients are now diagnosed and completed at their general practitioner

Ensured nationwide access to fast, secure, and clinically validated diagnostics for skin cancer

Biopsies and surgical interventions reduced by ~35%, lowering healthcare costs with an estimated DKK 215 million annually
